The Difference Between Jewellery and Fine Jewellery
Let’s go back to the question what is Jewellery. Jewellery also spelled jewelry is a personal ornament such as a ring, necklace made from precious metals or other materials.
Jewellery is one of the oldest forms of body adornment and during earlier times was created for practical use such as wealth storage, pinning together clothes and so on. Many items such as brooches and buckles originated as purely functional items, but evolved into decorative items as their functional requirements diminished. Jewellery was often made for people of high importance to show their status. However in recent times it has been used almost exclusively for decoration and perhaps a show of wealth?
Most cultures have at some point a practice of keeping wealth stored in the form of Jewellery.
However when the economy is driving gold as an investment has become less important as its value does not change much nor does does it pay you big dividends so pure gold jewellery is not used to store wealth any more in the Western world.
Jewellery today has evolved into fashionable items using precious materials. Jewellery helps to promote a personality and physical attractiveness and therefore it is important that the pieces you own generate exactly that.
Now what is fine Jewellery? Is it a big Name or Brand?
The answer is no. A big name or brand is clever marketing and perhaps that is why we think they only sell fine Jewellery.
On the internet you find so many fine Jewellers but are they what they are saying?
Fine Jewellery is basically a well made, well finished product with
precious metal. That means a round band is round, a flat surface is flat, a solder line is not visible, a stone is securely placed in a setting, no visible porosity and so on. Fine Jewellery is made by a qualified craftsman, jeweler, stone setter, polisher with lots of experience in the respective field. It requires good people, good tools and machinery to get the desired finish and not many jewelers have all that.
An important aspect is that the alloy used in a Jewellery piece is clearly indicated (hallmark) together with the responsibility Mark of the manufacturer. That gives you security in case of a dispute and is required if you export to many countries in the world. There are cases where alloys are not what is hallmarked just to keep the price down.
Stones don’t have to be without any flaws as it is a natural product. Synthetic stones are not welcomed in fine Jewellery as they indicate a compromise on price or quality.
Fine jewellery is a visible decoration, a matter of style and perhaps status as in the earlier days but as or most important; it has to make you feel good when you are wearing it. Equally important is that you buy it from a reputable source which has been in the business for some time.
